For Nengi and Trikytee, former housemates of the just concluded Big Brother Naija: lockdown, it’s a mixed bag of congratulations and criticisms. Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa state appointed them as Senior Special Assistants (SSA).
While Nengi was appointed SSA to the governor on Girl Child Development, Trikytee is SSA to the governor. Both former housemates are natives of Bayelsa state.
In his reaction, Laycon, winner of the just concluded BBNaija, posted on his Twitter account; “My SENIOR SPECIAL ASSISTANT MA. MY SSA. YES MA. ANYTHING FOR YOU MA. CLEAR THE ROAD FOR THE SSA @nengiofficial”.
Ozoemena, another former house mate also tweeted; “congrats to @nengiofficial on your appointment for the position as the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, the Face of Bayelsa state and Ambassador for the girl child Bayelsa state. Many more blessings”.
Another former house mate Neo Akpofure also showed excitement with a tweet. “Omo my girl oo…Senior Special Assistant to the Governor and Face of Bayelsa state. Congrats my sister @nengiofficial”.
Vee another former housemate equally tweeted ” your mum would be so proud of you! @nengiofficial”.
Wathonianyansi also congratulated Trikytee. “Congratulations dear (Trikytee) you deserve more”.
However, a number of social media users were not so thrilled by the news of the political appointments. And they expressed their resentments.
A twitter user slamed the governor for the appointment. He complained about governors giving out millions of Naira to former BBN housemates while they owe civil servants several months of unpaid salaries. “We need to set our priorities right in this country,” he said.
One @adefolaou also said “Public funds should never be used to support celebrities either in giving political appointments or giving them gifts (money, cars or houses). Public funds should ONLY be used for public service and governance. This is a principle we must all agree on even if we like the celebrities”.
@Morris_monye also expressed his resentment . “We must hold our government accountable. The appointment of a few BBNaija stars as SSAs must be questioned. What is their job function? What is their pedigree? What is expected of them in that role? Integrity is a currency for leadership”.
@OgbeniDipo equally tweeted “SSA on what exactly? And why? Do these reality tv stars have the qualification and competence? We’ve got a long long way to go”.
According to one @ulxma, “so you people oppose bad governance and corruption but you’re in support of the government using taxpayers money to sponsor/reward private individuals and give vague appointments to celebrities?
Criticisms
Some others did not see anything wrong with the appointments of these celebrities. They also expressed their opinion and criticized Nengi and Trikytee’s critics.
@maniac8989 “Everyone is shifting in their pants cos two young BBNaija housemates were made special assistant or whatever. If you were offered the same position would you say: “Sir I can’t accept this position cos I think I’m not qualified and there’s someone out there better”.
I think the appointments was a smart move by the governor. Especially considering the demand by #EndSARS protesters for inclusion of the youths in politics, among others.
The appointment might be an attempt to pacify Bayelsa youths. The Governor knows that the #EndSars protesters may return to the streets of Bayelsa and may not want what happened in Lagos to be replicated in his state.
