Lagos state Head of Service, Muri Okunola, this week gave his testimony in killings of EndSars protesters in Oct last year. During the sitting, Muri testified that non of the protesters recieved any injury from gun shots.
According to him, on visiting the hospitals where victims were receiving treatments, the injuries was from machete and tampede not gun shots. Muri said, Gov Babajide Sanwo Olu was accompanied with himself and his team on the went round Lagos hospitals where the victims were been treated to see for themselves the damages that resulted from the protest.
Though he agreed that the protest was hijacked, his testimony has raised a lot of questions. Who started the stampede ?, where did the shell casings of bullets fired found at the scene come from ?.
The various reports by local and international media pointed out that gun shots were fired by the military, a lot of protesters were injured while a few others where killed at the scene of the event.
the military on their own part ab initio denied being at the scene. Then they agreed that they were there but were not armed. Thereafter, they said they were armed but did not shot at the protesters. Finally, the agreed that they fired shots but that the bullets were rubber bullets.
With the way this is going, will there be justice for those whos lives were cut short?
This incident and the controversy surrounding it has further widened the gap of mistrust between citizens and government. I fear nothing can be done to bridge the gap.
